The New Government – who’s who? Ministers, deputies…

The Government

 

Fine Gael and Labour formed a Coalition government, taking office on 9th March 2011, following the General Election on 25th February 2011.  Enda Kenny, Leader of Fine Gael is the new Taoiseach while Eamonn Gilmore, Labour Party leader takes office as an Tanaiste.

Under the Constitution there must be at least one Member for every 20,000 to 30,000 people and at present there are 166 Members representing 43 constituencies. (For a full list, see Dail database at http://www.oireachtas.ie/members-hist/default.asp?housetype=0&HouseNum=31&disp=mem)

There are a total of 166 TDs (public representatives) in the Dáil.  Fine Gael secured 76 seats, the Labour Party, 37 seats; Fianna Fáil has 20 seats. There are 15 seats held by Independents.  Sinn Féin holds 14, while ‘others’ take 4 seats (including People before Profit, Socialist Party). The Green Party has no seats in this, the 31st Dáil. .76 of the 166 TDs elected are new to Dáil Éireann.
